When you make a picture dark with details you kind of make it darker.. And change the layer style so you will get through some details.

1. Open your image in Photoshop, I will be using this:

2. Now duplicate your base layer Rightclick it > Duplicate.

3. Click FILTER > BRUSH STROKES > DARK STROKES and just take the settings you like.

4. At last set the duplicated layer to Darken

You will now have a final result looking like this:
